Excerpted from: A fictional kingdom in Vermont

Joe Trenn owns a 20,000-tome hodgepodge of a shop, The Book Shed, in the last place you would expect to find it: Benson, a town of about 1,000 in south central Vermont. Customers are greeted by Jack, a Pekinese-shih tzu mix; Trenn is likely to be too buried in his computer to notice comings and goings. The shop is full to bursting with American history, political memoirs, and more, its rickety stairway leading to a fully stocked attic. The shop specializes in the work of British writer Anthony Powell.
''We carry as much Powell as I can find," Trenn said, though ''history is the big seller in most used-book stores."
