wear to tips, corners and edges of book, white marks to rear cover, spine sunned to illegibility; no jacket. Partially unopened. 8vo, in black and gilt decorated cloth. Inscribed on the front free endpaper in September, 1911 by the author to Colonel McElroy, "friends of the boys in blue-" The author was a “war governor” of Kansas, elected in 1864. He had served in the 2d Kansas Infantry and 83rd U.S. Colored Infantry Regiments. He took part in many local campaigns in Kansas after coming to the then Territory in 1859. Following his own inauguration Crawford traveled to Washington for Lincoln's second inaugural. Elected practically from the battlefield as the second governor of the State of Kansas, he served from 1864-1869. At the end of his first term and with the close of the Indian wars in Kansas Crawford withdrew from public life. First printing, no others noted.
