He had served in the 2d Kansas Infantry and 83rd U.S. Colored Infantry Regiments. He took part in many local campaigns in Kansas after coming to the then Territory in 1859. Following his own inauguration Crawford traveled to Washington for Lincoln's second inaugural. Elected practically from the battlefield as the second governor of the State of Kansas, he served from 1864-1869. At the end of his first term and with the close of the Indian wars in Kansas Crawford withdrew from public life. First printing, no others noted.
