The jacket includes a quote calling the book, "the plaintive utterance of a lonely soul puzzled by the riddle of the universe." This "New Authorized Edition." South African author Olive Schreiner's first published novel. It was an immediate success and has become recognised as one of the first feminist novels.[Although originally published in 1883, the book, which has been described as having "power, imagination, intense sincerity, close observation of both nature and psychology" could be called the first modern novel of the 20th century. Schreiner, born in Africa in 1855, a feminist, free thinker, intimate of Havelock Ellis and Cecil Rhodes, was according to the publication Current Opinion, "so great she ought to have been greater."
