Wenzell Brown (1912-1981) was a top name in the popular ’50s subgenre of juvenile delinquency (JD) fiction. A pulp author studying in New York, London, and Denmark, and teaching in China and Puerto Rico in the 1930s, Brown traveled around the Caribbean writing both novels and nonfiction. Dark Drums and They Called Her Charity were colorful, melodramatic historical novels set in Jamaica and the Virgin Islands. The present book is one of his non-fiction works. From the flap: "Through the blazing eyes and incendiary speech of its people Mr. Brown brings you an understanding of Puerto Rico's fateful plight....While America leads the world in seeking peace and the betterment of mankind our own incongruous colonial rule nurtures a a revolution on our very doorstep." Illustrated with striking black and white drawings of 1940's Puerto Rico by Jack Crane whose WWII service found him in the Caribbean and Central America.
