Blue and gray cloth. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Ex-Library. James Thacher (1754–1844) was an American physician and historical author born in Barnstable, Massachusetts. During the Revolutionary War Thacher placed himself in the forefront of the fighting. He served as a surgeon in the 1st Virginia Regiment, the Massachusetts 16th Regiment and with Scamell's Light Infantry, an elite fighting regiment drawn from the ranks of the New England regiments. Thacher was present at the 1781 surrender of the British in Yorktown. In his Military Journal, first published in 1823, Thacher gives his account of the fighting, intrigue and personalities. In the post war years Thacher practiced medicine in Plymouth , Mass. He was a prolific author chronicling American culture, politics and medicine.
