Parts of Manchester Vermont retain their charm from when this book was written. Its most famous resident was Robert Todd Lincoln, the President's son. His estate, Hildene, was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. Aside from the Northshire Bookstore, one of New England's best, the rest of the shopping district is a standard factory outlet experience.
