First published by Cassell & Co. in 1939, (most copies being lost early in the war) this was Powell's last work of fiction before WWII, after which he began work on the twelve volume Dance to the Music of Time. It is generally regarded as his most amusing. This first Heinemann edition is in the simple red and white jacket.
