Stevenson's retelling of legend or ghost story concerning the 1758 assault on Fort Carillon at Ticonderoga by the Black Watch, a Highland regiment. Fort Carillon was one of the principal French forts in what is now the Northeast of the United States. It was built at the confluence of Lake George and Lake Champlain an area that has been fought over by the French and English, the English and Americans and before all of them by the Iroquois and the Mohawks who considered the region to be the gateway to the country.
